Honoring State Representative Barbara Flynn Currie

by Anne S. on Tuesday, November 13, 2012

At the Nov. 9, 2012 American Heart Association/American Stroke Association Chicago Metropolitan Board of Directors meeting, State Representative Barbara Flynn Currie, Majority Leader of the Illinois House of Representatives, was honored by the AHA for being a legislative champion for public health.

Barbara has been invaluable as one of AHA’s best friends and strongest champions in Springfield over the years.  Just last year she helped to pass and enact into law House Bill 5480 – a bill that simply updates some of the state administrative requirements, making it easier for the AHA to become listed as one of the charitable options in the annual workplace giving campaign for state workers. Barbara has been a true champion in the fight against heart disease and stroke over the span of several decades working to improve public health in Illinois.  When AED legislation passed, Barbara was there for us. When the Smokefree Illinois Act was passed, Barbara was there. When PE legislation passed, she was there. And when we worked with other health groups to raise tobacco taxes Barbara was there too.

We are and will always be grateful for Barbara’s public service and commitment to working with us to build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular disease and stroke.
