Colorado Holds World Stroke Day Event

by Erin H. on Tuesday, November 12, 2013

On October 29th Volunteers, Advocates and Legislators met at the Colorado State Capitol to create awareness around Stroke, its signs, symptoms and the importance of acting FAST.

The group convened at 7:30 am for a breakfast and some mingling.  At 8 a.m. the educational portion of the event began.  The group was able to hear from Stroke Survivor and You’re the Cure Volunteer Mary Ann Orr.  Mary Ann experienced a stroke at a very young age  and she talked to the group about the importance of knowing the symptoms and spreading awareness.  She is a great example of why it is so important to partake in events like World Stroke Day.

After Mary Ann spoke, the group also asked questions about her experience testifying in front of the legislature in this past 2013 Legislative session.  They then leaned about AHA advocacy efforts in Colorado for the upcoming 2014 legislative session, heard how a bill becomes a law, and got to hear from Representative Angela Williams about the importance of taking part in advocacy related efforts.

This event was, hopefully, the first of many World Stroke Day Breakfasts to be held in Colorado.
