What great weather for this year’s Central Maine Heart Walk! A perfect Maine September day. There was glorious sunshine, fog burning off in the AM …and a hot air balloon. I spent the morning talking to folks from all walks of life who were participating in the walk. I teamed up with some great volunteers to educate about the Health Insurance Marketplace and to sign people up for You’re the Cure.
The Marketplace launches on October 1, 2013 and for folks who sign up by December 15, 2013 coverage starts January 1, 2014. Finally, affordable health insurance will be within reach of more hard-working Mainers.
The American Heart Association has made it a priority to make sure everyone who is eligible to buy insurance on the Marketplace knows how to do it. All across the country, people will be logging into www.healthcare.gov . In Maine, there is another great resource: Enroll207. You can follow this link: http://www.enroll207.com/ and find help from the people right here in Maine who can walk you through the process.
If you have friends or family who may be without health insurance, or who have one of those high-deductible plans, please tell them to go to one of the websites above, or to call 800-318-2596.
If they find out that they don’t qualify for insurance from the Marketplace because they don’t make enough money, I want to hear their story. They are probably one of the 70,000 Mainers who won’t get coverage because Governor LePage vetoed a bill that would have allowed them to access affordable health care. I am working hard to make that a reality—but I need stories to convince legislators that these are real Mainers. Not just statistics.
