Heart Attack and Stroke Symptoms

An update on our work to ensure everyone in Utah gets the best care possible

This summer, following legislation passed during the 2023 and 2024 Legislative Sessions, the Bureau of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) was transferred from the Department of Health and Human Services to the Department of Public Safety.

This shift is significant for several of our Quality Acute Systems of Care policies. Specifically, the American Heart Association in Utah is collaborating with the Department and key hospital stakeholders to establish a Heart Attack Facility Designation policy and enhance the existing Stroke Facility Designation by including thrombectomy-capable facilities. This new departmental alignment offers an opportunity to educate decision-makers and facilitate direct discussions between cardiovascular care providers and EMS about improving care quality.
