August Recess Activities
For many children and their parents, the word ‘recess’ means an opportunity to take a break from classes or studies during a school day. For Members of Congress- including the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate- ‘Recess’ means something else altogether. When Congress is in recess, it typically means that these elected officials are working in their home districts or states rather than in Washington, D.C. Their time is often spent meeting with constituents and hosting or attending events in their communities. The most consistent and longest recess for Congress is during the month of August.
During the month of August, Members of Congress want to hear about the issues that matter most to their constituents. The recess is a fantastic opportunity for you to connect with your elected representatives, introduce yourself and discuss their work in Congress. You can meet with your representatives by attending town hall meetings or other public events, or by visiting their in-state or in-district offices. Remember, they are working to represent you, so your opinion matters.
