Iowa Advocacy Day 2025: Advocates uniting to change the future of health

On February 20th, 2025, the American Heart Association hosted the Iowa Heart on the Hill 2025 at the Capitol Building in Des Moines, Iowa. The event brought together thirty-six passionate advocates, legislators, and members from organizations such as the CERP Coalition, IEMSA, Hunger Coalition, Iowa Stroke Task Force, Brain Injury Alliance of Iowa, Project Adam, and Iowa Heart Foundation. The primary goal was to advocate for Acute Cardiac Events in Schools.

Throughout the day, advocates held eighteen meetings with legislators and staff. Legislators responded positively, with many expressing support and committing to further discussions. Several advocates, including a survivor, had the opportunity to meet with Sen Weiner, the Senate Minority Leader, to discuss the CERP legislation.

The event yielded promising outcomes, including securing several legislative champions for Cardiac Emergency Response Plans (CERP) in Schools.

The day was filled with inspiring stories and impactful moments. One of the strongest champions, Lezlie Mestdagh, Executive Director of the Iowa Heart Foundation and AHA Advocacy Committee member, shared her personal story. As a mother of a son with a heart condition who carries an AED to school, Lezlie understands the critical importance of CERP plans. She passionately advocated for the legislation, emphasizing how it could protect her son and countless other students, faculty, and visitors.

Overall, Iowa Heart on the Hill 2025 was a resounding success. It showed the power of advocates uniting to influence health policies, improving lives, and fostering healthier communities.
