Medicaid Matters to Montana: Advocates uniting to change the future of health
On February 24, 2025, the American Heart Association joined forces with other passionate advocates from partner organizations at the Capitol building in Helena, for Medicaid Matters to Montana 2025. This event included volunteers from the Healthy Montana Coalition, Catalyst MT, Montana Budget & Policy Center, Big Sky 55+, Montana Nonprofit Association, American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, Montana Medical Association, AARP, SEIU, and PacificSource who were dedicated to one critical mission: protecting Medicaid expansion.
Advocates engaged with over 50 legislators during a luncheon, ensuring that the importance of Medicaid reauthorization remained at the forefront of discussions. Notably, the sponsor of the Medicaid reauthorization bill in the Senate was in attendance, providing an opportunity to thank him for his leadership and support. The Minority Leader was also present, along with several members of the Senate Finance and Claims Committee, where the bill was being reviewed that very day. Advocates thanked those who had already pledged their support and encouraged continued backing to see the bill through to passage.
The event’s impact was immediate, Senate Finance and Claims Committee members who volunteers met with helped ensure the bill’s passage out of committee the next day. Later that week, the Senate passed the bill and send it to the Governor’s desk for his signature.
Medicaid recipient Chet Philips opened the event by sharing his personal experience, illustrating the life-changing impact Medicaid expansion has been for his family. Legislators also received county-specific Medicaid enrollment data and information on how Medicaid expansion supports working Montanans. Coalition partners were on hand to answer questions and reinforce the need for continued support. Volunteers from the American Heart Association urged lawmakers to back Medicaid reauthorization, emphasizing its vital role in creating healthier communities.
The event was a resounding success, a testament to the power of advocacy and collective action. When passionate voices come together, they can influence policies that save lives and strengthen communities. The American Heart Association remains committed to advancing health equity, and this event was a powerful step toward that goal.
