South Dakota EMS/AHA Day at the Capitol and Legislative Social 2025: Collaborating to change the future of health

On February 3, 2025, the American Heart Association co-hosted the annual EMS/American Heart Association Day at the Capitol & Legislative Social in Pierre, South Dakota. The event brought together legislators, representatives from the South Dakota Department of Health, and EMS professionals. The main goals were to advocate for crucial cardiovascular health policies, educate on the importance of systems of care, and promote Cardiac Emergency Response Plans (CERPs) in schools and athletic events. Additionally, the event aimed to support leadership transitions during the legislative session. This collaborative effort underscored the importance of enhancing cardiovascular care and emergency readiness across the state.

Throughout the day and during the evening social, the American Heart Association engaged with approximately 15-20 legislators and state staff in meaningful discussions on key cardiovascular health initiatives. Legislators responded positively, with many expressing support and committing to further conversations.

A highlight of the day was teaching the South Dakota Department of Health Division Director’s 9-year-old son Hands-Only CPR and AED use, emphasizing the importance of early education in lifesaving techniques. Furthermore, the South Dakota Department of Health committed to advancing the process of designating the State Capitol as a Cardiac Ready Campus, setting a precedent for other state buildings to follow in leading statewide efforts for improved cardiac emergency readiness.

The event’s immediate outcomes were promising, with strong prospects for securing a sponsor for the CERPs Bill and generating broader interest in Systems of Care. These developments reflect growing legislative engagement and momentum toward improving cardiovascular health policies in South Dakota.

Overall, the 2025 EMS/American Heart Association Day at the Capitol/Legislative Social was a resounding success. It demonstrated the power of collaboration in changing the future of health by advocating for policies that improve lives and create healthier communities.
