Find Out What We’re Doing in Your State and Community
We’re working in states and communities across the country to improve the chain of survival from cardiac arrest: CPR training as high school graduation requirement so that more people are ready to take action when cardiac arrests occur; requiring schools and athletic facilities and events have a Cardiac Emergency Response Plan, and ensuring the person who answers the 911 call can identify a cardiac emergency and coach the caller through CPR. Together we can save lives from cardiac arrest.

We've joined with the NFL to Promote CPR
The American Heart Association, a founding member of the Smart Heart Sports Coalition, established by the NFL to advocate for all 50 states to adopt evidence-based policies that will save lives from cardiac arrests outside of a hospital among students by ensuring that schools, school athletic facilities and athletic events have a cardiac emergency response plan in place. Of the 23,000 children who will experience cardiac arrest outside of a hospital in the United States each year, about 40% of these events are sports-related. Whether in the classroom or on the playing field, having a plan in place to enable faculty, staff, and students to quickly and correctly respond to a cardiac emergency can save lives. CPR, if performed immediately, can double or triple a person’s chance of survival. In schools with AEDs, approximately 70% of children survive cardiac arrest – 7 times the overall survival rate for children.
